"Fun Art"

The reason I call this section “Fun Art” is because these are the projects that brought a special kind of happiness into my life. Some were unusual commissions, some were "one of a kind" shows, and others were simply a joy to create. Each piece in this collection holds a memory of creativity, excitement, and fun.

"Sculptures for the Blind"

A famous stone carver artist from Georgia, Barbara Rowlett- Rheingrover "Sculptures for the Blind" shows. Did three of these and it was a wonderful idea from her and wish there had been more. She is the Blond lady in the top photo.

"Stomp the Yard"

My only movie commission. I carved this from foam, (same as ice chests styrofoam). The movie was a hit, and I spent three weeks working on this beast for only about 15 seconds of showtime. With only one helper, and after hiring a metal artist to build the inner frame, the carving began.

When it was finally completed, I was hoping to see my name in the credits for my work. As soon as we were done, a guy walked in from the main office, picked up my electric Sawzall, trimmed the underbelly (which made me want to hit him), made a few snips here and there, thanked us, and left. He got full credit. But I got the check.

"Tuscan Kitchen"

The largest tile project I ever completed was for a new kitchen in a high-rise condominium in Midtown Atlanta. The owners wanted a backsplash that would create the feeling of looking out onto a beautiful Italian Tuscany landscape. After researching the region and gathering inspiration, I developed a custom design that captured the charm and warmth of the Tuscan countryside.

I created the initial concept on foam boards and brought them into the condo for presentation. The finished illustration stretched nearly 15 feet in length and featured colors similar to those shown below. The cool part was when it was up in place, they wanted changes and all I had to do was cut the boards and place them where they wanted them to go.  It was a wonderful and rewarding project, not only because of its size and creativity, but also because it gave me the opportunity to meet some truly wonderful people who became friends.

Thank you, Catherine, for believing in me and trusting me with your vision. It remains one of my favorite projects to this day.
